The major and minor scales are the foundation of all music whether you are using both scales or one at a time. But there are major differences in them that will make it easy to differentiate between the two.
The 3rd, 6th and 7th notes are different between the two scales. When we talk about going from the major to minor scales, these notes are lowered a half step and when going from the minor to major scales these notes are raised a half step.
D Major: D – E – F# – G – A – B – C# – D
d minor: d – e – f – g – a – bb – c – d
As you can see, the D major scale the third note (F#) is a half step higher than the d minor scale with just a natural f. The same goes for the 6th and 7th steps between the two scales.
The order of whole steps and half steps play a key role in the difference between the two scale types as well.
