Getting Gig Ready Part 3: Overcoming Nervousness

final copy of nervousness

This is the one area as a musician I tend to have a hard time with. I get nervous before any gig I am going to play. I am a perfectionist and as musicians we tend to be that way. I have learned though that if I mess a song up or don’t play it exactly how I had written it the audience does not care!

They are there to have a good time. They are not there to hear you whine about how the sound isn’t that good or that your nervous or you suck.

I have come across a musician who said those things and kind of just walked off stage.

It’s easy to just watch someone else play but it is brave to play out yourself.

Here are some tips I use when I get nervous before a gig:

The audience does not care if you mess up! They probably won’t even notice. Just keep playing and don’t let it bother you.

Pretend that you are at the most comfortable place when you play. Maybe it is your bedroom or a studio or even the bathroom. Imagine you are there when you are playing.

Make sure to properly hydrate and eat. Sometimes our nerves can get the best of us and we forget to do those things.

I hope some of these tips help you on your awesome journey.

Let me know how you overcome nervousness in the comments below.

Thanks!
